So my sunroof has been leaking on and off on my FJ80 for about two years now. The cause of this problem is that the 20 year old gasket around the glass has shrunk - no longer making a great seal with the hole in the roof. I have used some work arounds, such as making sure my drains were in excellent operating order but I has turned into an ever losing battle.

I looked into getting a new gasket but that requires buying new glass and a new gasket plus you have to drop the headliner to do the repair (I replaced a headliner in my parents ranger rover last year and it was not fun) so this option seemed extremely unappealing. So my solution cost $6 and took about 30 mins to do. Any guesses??

Silicone sealant!

I also disconnected the control switches so that no one would ruin my hard work.

Now to dry out the interior in mid 30's weather...

My sun roof doesn't work, so I put black silicone on the seal, taped off the area around it and smoothed it out. You can't tell by looking at it.

Yeah I wasn't exactly going for looks. The roof of my car is about 8 feet up so luckily no one can see this handy work haha.

damn it. I was afraid that was the solution. I went through a car wash and head water leaking in from a clogged drain and I thought that once I cleared out the drain that I would be good to go. But doesn't sound like it. I like using it from time to and and I don't want to replace the whole thing.

Did it leak from the front or the rear? The good news is that this quick fix is easily reversible - if/when you actually want to do it properly.

There are some other quick fixes that people have suggested that I didn't try. Some wrapped old bike tubes around the seal to thicken it up. Others shoved speaker wire up into a crevice in the seal from the bottom side, also to thicken up the seal. The issue with these fixes is that you can only do the front 3/4s of the sunroof leaving back exposed. My back portion was leaking so I just through in the towel and went this route.

hmm, it was my front DS, so there is hope that I can just add bulk to the seal and call it a day for now. I hate sunroofs.

Yup I hate them too. Obviously these fixes only delay the inevitable. But yours is a bit newer than mine so you probably have more time.
